Life, love, death and rebirth are words that we use, often with little emotional connection to their actual meaning. We are surrounded by distractions that isolate us from true emotionality. Personal loss is often the quickest way to re-connect us with our feelings.
“When Your Heart Has Wings” explores the importance of love in one’s life journey as it re-lives the 25-year artistic, business, and personal partnership between Chris and Ron; a journey cut short by Chris’ death from cancer in 2005. Like the chorus of a Greek drama, their story is told by the words of 150 friends and colleagues, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sean Penn. Using historic stock footage for scope and a sense of history, home movies, videos, stills, clips from films Ron and Chris made together, and innovative re-creations, the film follows Ron and Chris from their initial encounter in 1980 to the very last moment of Chris’ life in 2004.
The second act bares Ron’s emotional despair and struggle to make sense of his life, including surviving a heart attack. Act Three brings Ron a soul mate from halfway across the world in Turkey and a rebirth of Ron’s hope. Establishing a life together in San Francisco, Ozgur and Ron face daunting challenges of economics, culture, immigration problems and isolation. But their love gives them strength to face all odds.
“Wings” uses classic movie rear projection techniques and the wizardry of modern computer technology to combine sound, stills and moving images in a manner that illustrates the events and emotions, and the fears and hopes behind them, opening a door for the audience to do the same.
Ultimately, the film and the story of these three courageous men illuminates the complex and uplifting nature and power of love itself.
